Mexican Barbie

Since this week we are celebrating Mexican Independence, this post entry will be about Barbie in Mexico.

In 1994 Barbie released Quinceañera Teresa in Mexico to celebrate Girls Day.  This Barbie doll was dressed with the typical pink Quinceañera dress; this special edition launched by Barbie was created to represent fifteen-year old Mexican teenagers who were facing the change from being a girl to a teenager.

This celebration has been very special in Mexican culture for many years, and it has a distinctive tradition called “The last doll”. It consists of a dance between the fifteen year old girl and her dad giving her a last doll as a symbol that she is already a grown up.
Barbie has also launched Barbie dolls dressed up with typical Mexican dresses in its Barbie Doll Collection.

In June of this year, the “Barbie Awards 2011” took place for the first time in Mexico City.  In this event several prominent Mexican women received recognition, three of these women were the diver Paola Espinosa, painter Martha Chapa and actress Diana Bracho.

These women said they identified themselves with Barbie dolls because they consider her selves struggling and successful women. The diver Paola Espinosa said that since little, she felt inspired in being someone in life, being beautiful, being a woman and all that entails Barbie role.

The ceremony made allusion to Barbie’s more than 100 jobs the blonde doll has played over 52 years of life. But the most important of all, it was specially done to recognize Mexican women who reached their dreams and succeed in any job they loved.

  1. Well this is amazing I did know that there were maexican Barbie dolls, but I think it is something really interesting that Barbie made a Mexican doll even with a typical dress and everything; they look so cute!! For me it seems a pretty good idea to recognize Mexican women and our Mexican traditions, this shows how important are these quinceañeras partys for our people. Maybe some girl could get interested in our culture and look out for some information to get to know it better. Mexican women are gorgeous and the fact that Barbie dolls represented it is really awesome.

  2. I think you had a good idea relating Barbie's women with the Mexican festivals, because that is a way to remember our tradition. In fact, today September 16 is a special day for all Mexicans because of their independence. The Mexican Independence occurred during 1810 to 1821 and the most important characters were Miguel Hidalgo, Jose Maria Morelos, Vicente Guerrero and Agustin de Iturbide. Is important to mention that for this reason we give the cry of Independence in where this ritual recreates the moment in which Father Hidalgo, gathered his followers in Dolores Guanajuato. Also the streets, houses, buildings, and cars are decorated everywhere in the country. On every street corner there are vendors selling flags, balloons, shuttleclock, all with the green, white and red, our national colors. So this is a little summary about what the independence is. So that is why I think Barbie can be an original representation to this tradition; where Mexican celebrates this important moment for us. Also during that time women used beautiful dresses.
In conclusion, I think we have to appreciate the courage Mexico had because they achieve to be an independent nation. Also I liked the pictures you put as a example because we can understand better what you want to transmit for us.

  3. Hi,
I liked very much this post of you
I did knew that there were Barbie’s dresses with typical Mexican dresses because I've see them, and I heard that there was a Barbie Quinceañera, but I had never saw it before or read any information that supported that the Barbie existed.
It is interesting the information that you got about Mexican Barbie :D . I've seen Barbie with beautiful dresses from the traditional Mexican clothing, like those women use when dancing traditional Mexican dances, those are really pretty x3 and about the Barbie with the classical quinceañera pink dress, I had never liked pink dresses, anyway, thanks for the information, I’ll be looking forward to your next post C:

GBU, bye bye, have a nice day ~ !
